What Makes Barro Negro Special

Barro Negro & Hand Carving

Barro Negro is one of Oaxaca’s most iconic ceramics, known for its deep black shine and timeless look. Its color is completely natural—no dyes, paints, or chemicals. The black tone comes from the clay itself and a traditional firing method perfected over generations.

How It Turns Black Naturally

The clay from San Bartolo Coyotepec is rich in minerals, especially iron oxides. After each piece is shaped and dried, artisans fire it in a low-oxygen kiln. By sealing the kiln near the end of the firing, the minerals react with the smoke, transforming the clay into its signature natural black.
Some pieces are polished with a smooth stone for a glossy finish, while others remain matte and rustic.

Hand Carving

Many designs are also hand-carved while the clay is still firm. Using simple tools, artisans cut every pattern and texture by hand no machines. Each carving reflects the artisan’s skill and creativity, making every piece truly one of a kind.

Why It’s Special

  • 100% natural color

  • Handmade by Oaxacan artisans

  • Generations of tradition

  • Unique tones, carvings, and finishes
